Howto to access mws / tsm from outside Garching

The Windows servers mws (micro wave studio) and tsm (general purpose Windows20003 server) are on private IP addresses not visible from outside the MHN (Muenchner Hochschul Netz). To access these machines a VPN (Virtual Personal Network) connection into the MHN is required.

Installation and operation of an VPN-Client is described in the webpages of the LRZ .

http://www.lrz-muenchen.de/services/netz/mobil/vpn

Both installation and operation require a userid and password. For users with an account at MLL-Computing Cluster in Garching the userid is e.g: gpig@bl.lmu with the password used at Garching. Note the @bl.lmu, this is the Radius identification of Garching MLL-Computing Cluster. To get a login window of the mws a Remote Desktop Client must be installed on the local machine. For Linux this program is called rdesktop and may be downloaded as rpm from the internet. At Garching it is available e.g. Fedora Core 2 at:

/share/linuxcd/fedora-linux-core/2/i386/os/Fedora/RPMS/rdesktop-1.3.1-3.i386.rpm
If the VPN connection is established i.e.

ping mws.bl-group.physik.uni-muenchen.de
should work

rdesktop -g90% -a 16 mws.bl-group.physik.uni-muenchen.de
gives a login window. In this window the normal userid (e.g. gpig) is used.

On WindowsXP a Remote Desktop Client is provided by default.
