Howto restore lost files,
i.e. howto use the (automatic) backup system

All files in the users home directories and in /data areas are automatically backuped every night on the Archiv- und Backupsystem TSM provided by LRZ Muenchen Three versions of every file are kept. Assume you change a file every day: Then you can restore the version of yesterday (called the active version) and the one 2 and 3 days ago (called inactive). If a file is deleted then the backup is kept for half a year. After this it will also disappear from the backup system.

To use the system type: dsm
and select: Restore files and directories to your system.
If you want to restore an inactive (e.g. the version of the day before yesterday) you have to activate
Display activate/inactive files
from the View popup menu before you select the file to be restored.

Use then the item File Level
Note:
Files in home directories saved before 20.Jun.04 start with: export/home/

Never use the (unfortunately default) Restore to original location since this normally doesnt work. Instead select Restore to the following location and you will be offered the correct restore path starting e.g. /home/ha/

Files in home directories saved after 20.Jun.04 start with: home

Files in data directories are below: export/data

Except: data/etp6, data/etp7 and data/ha
Note:
This difference is a restriction of the backup system when dealing with NFS mounted systems. This should be simplified eventually and only the short notation like data/etp6 should remain.
The same system may also be used to archive files for long duration. These files are kept for 10 years regardless if they exist on the user home / data directories. For details consult the documentation provided by the LRZ.
